Charlie Cornell

CHARLIE B. CORNELL COACH/EDUCATOR 2006

A great storyteller, inside the classroom and out, Mr. Charlie B. Cornell has had a memorable career as a coach and educator for 36 years.  Charlie Cornell is a 1962 graduate of Grand Rapids High School in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

     After high school, Charlie was in the United States Army from 1962-1965.  He was honorably discharged.  He then attended Itasca Community College from 1965-1967 and graduated in 1969 from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies.  He also received graduate credits from Bemidji State University, the University of North Dakota and Macalester College.

      From August of 1969 through February 2002, Mr. Cornell worked as a Social Studies instructor at Lincoln High School.  His school related activities include:  Certified Basketball Official (1969-1995), Certified Baseball Official (1970-1989), Model United Nations Advisor (1970-1990), Close-Up Advisor (1989-2001), Assistant Baseball Coach (1970-1973), Head Baseball Coach (1974-1985 and 1996-1997), Head Girls Golf Coach (1992-1995), Volunteer Assistant Baseball (2004-Present) and Assistant Football Coach (1969- Present).

     He has also been a member of the Minnesota Education Association and the Thief River Falls Education Association from 1969-2002.  For over thirty years, he has been a member of the Elks Club, the American Legion, the MN Coaches Association, and the Tryvest Investment Club.  He has also received awards such as the KTHI Teacher of the Month Award (1994-1995), and the Assistant Coach of the Year award (2005-2006).  He most recently received the Butch Nash Award, which is given to the ideal assistant football coach, based on his total loyalty and coaching competency.

     Mr. Charlie Cornell currently lives in Thief River Falls with his wife, Kitty.  They have a son and a daughter.
