Mike Lundgren

MIKE LUNDGREN SPORTS EDITOR 2003

At the age of 17, Mike Lundgren began his journalism career with no formal background in writing.  However, in his 33 years with the Thief River Falls Times he has become the voice for area athletics, contributing to the success of many area programs, including the Thief River Falls Prowlers.

Lundgren graduated from the broadcasting program at the Thief River Falls Vocational-Technical School and began his job at the Times in 1970.  He will soon begin his thirty-fourth year as the one-man sports department of the Times, responsible for writing, photography, and page layout.

On the job six or seven days a week, Lundgren’s hard work and dedication have earned him respect and compliments not only from regular readers, but also from athletes, parents, and coaches.  In 2001, his passion for sports reporting earned him the Minnesota State High School Athletic Directors Association Distinguished Service Award.

In addition to the Prowlers, Lundgren covers sporting events for Northland Community and Technical College and five area high schools, as well as city league sports throughout the region.  His fair and detailed reports give recognition for results and effort while promoting the basic principles of athletics in schools and communities.

In addition to his position at the Times, Lundgren has volunteered in numerous amateur and youth athletic programs in the community.  He is currently helping to organize the first Cody Lundgren Memorial SIDS Golf Tournament to benefit the Sudden Infant Death Center at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minneapolis.

Lundgren’s positive attitude, leadership skills, and dedication to quality sports reporting have given area athletic programs the support they need to succeed.
