DR. ORLEY D. GUNDERSON EDUCATOR/ADMINISTRATOR 2003

Orley Gunderson is known for setting goals and achieving them. Gunderson’s leadership skills have led to the educational vitality of Thief River Falls, and his hard work and perseverance have contributed to its economic growth.

Gunderson started his career in Thief River Falls as a student teacher after receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Minnesota.  After several years of teaching agriculture, Gunderson moved into administration. He completed a Master of Science Degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Doctorate of Education Degree from Oregon State University. He has served as an Acting Superintendent of the Thief River Falls School District and is currently the College President of Northland Community and Technical College.

Results of Gunderson’s leadership abilities can be seen around Thief River Falls and NCTC. He has been a guiding force behind the development of the Multi-Events Center, which provides a first-class facility for Prowler and Pioneer baseball, softball, football, and track.  He has also provided leadership in acquiring funds for remodeling NCTC and developing the Aviation Center.  Another goal set and accomplished by Gunderson is the increased enrollment of women and minority students at NCTC.

As an active member of the community, Gunderson has served on the Jobs Incorporated Board, various Chamber of Commerce committees, church committees, and athletic booster clubs.  In 1992 Gunderson received the Vision and Leadership Award from Jobs Incorporated for his tireless efforts in forging partnership between economic development and education.

Gunderson’s actions speak louder than his words.  One only has to look around the community to see the tangible results of his outstanding leadership.
