Robert Hanson

ROBERT GORDON HANSON ATHLETE/COMMUNITY MEMBER 1996

Robert is a 1938 graduate of Lincoln High School and graduated with honors from Gustavus Adolphus College. 

     At Lincoln Bob was a three-sport athlete.  He captained an undefeated football team, captained the gymnastics team and participated in four events in track.

     Mr. Hansen continued his athletic success in college.  He co-captained the football team, captained the swim team and captured State titles in the 100 and 220-yard free style events.  He was a star performer in gymnastics and played wing on the hockey team.  He is a member of the Gustavus Adolphus Athletic Hall of Fame.

     After teaching, coaching, and becoming director of guidance at Madison High School in Minnesota, Bob was called by Governor Elmer Anderson to serve as Commissioner of Veteran Affairs.  After retiring from the commission, Bob returned to Madison as the district’s guidance counselor.  In 1969 he accepted an appointment as city manager, a position he held until he retired in 1981.

     Mr. Hansen served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945.  He was an active member of the American Legion, and in 1958 he was elected to the highest American Legion Office in Minnesota, Department Commander.
