Stanley Newland
Mr. Newland graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938. He is recognized as the person directly responsible for creating the Panther as the symbol for the Prowler Athletic Teams. As an artist for the school yearbook, he introduced the Panther to illustrate various sections and over the years it was adopted as the team symbol. In addition the Panther has also become a symbol for the city of Thief River Falls.
After serving in the Navy during World War II, he attended the New York Phoenix School of Design where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. From there he launched a successful career as an artist.
As a freelance artist based in New York City, he has done illustrations for major television commercials, books, magazines, heraldic art, and educational films.
Specializing in watercolor painting, Mr. Newland has worked as an instructor for various classes in that difficult medium. His paintings, which have won numerous awards and critical acclaim, can now be found hanging in 30 states, plus the countries of Japan, Great Britain, and Germany.
In the latter part of his career, Mr. Newland worked for Goldryer, Ltd., as an art restorer helping to restore and preserve the collections of museums and private collectors. He has helped restore the works of such artists as Picasso, Norman Rockwell, Grandma Moses, Andy Warhol and many others. His lifelong career in art illustrates what can become of a TRF farm boy who simply loved to draw.
